On Nov. 3, vote yes on Amendment 1 so it will be harder for Iowa government to raise certain income
taxes or create a new state tax on income.
Amendment 1 would require a two-thirds vote in both the Iowa House and Senate before lawmakers
could take those actions. That higher standard means significant tax increases would need broad
support, not simply a narrow majority.
A two-thirds requirement does not mean taxes could never be raised. It means that before reaching
further into the pockets of Iowa families, farmers, workers and businesses, there would need to be
substantial support from legislators across our state.
The amendment is limited in scope. It applies to certain state taxes based on income. Taxes imposed at
the option of local government are specifically excluded.
Iowans work hard for what they earn. This is about accountability and protecting Iowa taxpayers for
generations to come.
Legislatures, governors and political majorities change. A constitutional safeguard is not about who
controls state government today; it is about establishing a higher standard any future legislature must
follow.
After voting, flip your ballot over. Find Amendment 1. Vote yes.
