DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Republican Party of Iowa is advocating for Amendment One, a proposed constitutional amendment on the Nov. 3 ballot, while criticizing Democratic congressional candidate Josh Turek over his stance on taxes.
Amendment One would require a two-thirds supermajority in both the Iowa House and Senate to pass any bill increasing the state’s individual or corporate income tax rates or creating a new income tax.
Supporters of the amendment highlighted its significance and expressed concerns about Turek’s record.
“I think it’s very important to share this news about Iowa and Amendment Number One, and really what Josh Turek’s record is of. He doesn’t want to support Iowa taxpayers. You know, he seems to be in favor of more government control and higher taxes. And I think it’s important to step up and say no,” a supporter said.
Turek’s campaign provided the following statement to KCCI:
“Josh Turek has repeatedly worked with Republicans to cut taxes for Iowans, lowering income and property taxes. Meanwhile, Ashley Hinson voted to cut health care for 110,000 Iowans just to give a tax break to her Epstein-linked billionaire donors. Since getting to D.C., Hinson has increased her net worth by up to 15x while repeatedly voting to hike costs for Iowans on everything from health care to gas to groceries. As Iowa’s next U.S. Senator, Josh Turek will be laser-focused on lowering costs and, unlike Ashley Hinson, will never sell out Iowans to get rich.”
The Iowa Democratic Party responded by aligning with a statement released by Common Good Iowa last week.
“Amendment 1 is a threat to Iowa’s future. It is incompatible with the Iowa values of fairness and accountability that we all prize,” the statement said. “If enacted, Amendment One would give a small minority of legislators the power to obstruct essential bipartisan tax reform.”

Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and absentee ballots will begin being sent out next month.
